Project Spotlight

Share the Ride Backend

Share is the production-ready Node.js and Express service behind the "Share the Ride" carpooling platform, delivering secure REST and WebSocket experiences for riders and drivers.

Production Ready

Multi-region deployments with environment-aware configuration, rate limiting, and zero-downtime releases keep commuter traffic flowing.

Secure by Design

Tenant-aware JWT flows, audit trails, and encryption utilities give riders and drivers credible trust guarantees.

Observability

Centralized logging, Grafana dashboards, and synthetic health probes surface issues long before users notice.

What I Built

I designed and implemented a layered backend that keeps the platform reliable and responsive. It orchestrates authentication, ride workflows, chat, notifications, and scheduled maintenance jobs while staying adaptable to feature requests from product and mobile teams.

Highlights

  • JWT-secured APIs covering posts, interests, reviews, and rider onboarding.
  • Real-time Socket.IO messaging with optional AES encryption and Firebase fallback alerts.
  • Daily jobs that archive stale posts, refresh ride statistics, and prune expired conversations.

Architecture Glimpse

The service follows a clear separation of concerns: Express routers feed thin controllers, business logic lives in domain services, and Sequelize modules handle data access for MySQL. Shared utilities cover localization, notifications, and encryption so each feature team has consistent building blocks.

Stack at a Glance

Core

Node.js, Express 4, Socket.IO, Sequelize, MySQL

Messaging & Auth

JWT, Firebase Cloud Messaging, Redis (optional), Nodemailer

Operational

node-schedule jobs, Docker-ready configuration, REST client collections

Outcome

Share has supported multi-language trip planning across web and mobile clients since launch. The backend scales comfortably on Node 16+, keeps ride data fresh with automated pruning, and provides a single source of truth for notifications and chat history.
